How to keep faith in God in these modern times

One could say that being a believer is very difficult these days. Faith is under attack on all sides. I’m not talking about the science vs. religion debate. It is pretty obvious that these two are opposites that exist to satisfy two separate needs. What I’m talking about is the fact that because of all the hardships that people face in life today, they seem to be turning their hearts away from God and are instead mired in bad will and negativity. Let’s discuss today how to keep your faith, despite going through hard times.

How to keep faith in God in these modern times

One thing that frustrates people is when things don’t happen the way that they want them to happen. You didn’t land that cushy six-figure job, you didn’t pass an exam in school, bam, let’s be angry at someone, who else but God. God seems to have become a scapegoat for all the negativity in peoples lives. After all, God is the reason anything ever happens, right?

The way I see it though, God has given us free will so that we can choose to either dwell in negativity, blame Him, the environment, whoever, or we can instead adjust our attitude. In fact, we even have the 7 deadly sins as our guide. There’s greed, envy, sloth among those. Why do you need a six figure job, couldn’t you settle for less? Do you really need that fancy new car or apartment? Some will say that that’s a compromise, but I would say it’s just accepting reality. I didn’t say anything about working on getting a better job, there’s no shame against that. Similarly, was it really God who’s to blame for you not being prepared enough for you exam?

I think that in order for people to keep their faith in God they need to make sure to ask themsevles, deep down, who really is to blame for the situation that brought them to question their faith? I myself, before discovering my faith in Jesus again, would blame God, Jesus, the saints, everyone and anyone for the troubles that I found myself in. It was only when I’ve taken responsibility myself, when I said, I’m the one who’s at fault for my situation, that things started looking up. God isn’t here to make things easier for you, but rather to test you, to see how you react to situations that you find yourself in. Stop asking too much out of life all at once, start small and work your way from there. After all, you can’t start running before you walk. Once you do that, you’ll find your faith in God, and it will help you go find piece.
